So I've got a wish list a mile long, but thought you might offer some input.

1. Light meter - Sekonic L-358
2. Seamless paper rolls
3. Better 24-70 or similar lens for crisper shots (my 24-70 was dropped and isn't the same since repair)
4. Reflectors/umbrellas for D4 lights
5. Giant Octopus- I mean octobox
6. Additional speedrings for softboxes

so what would you knock off the list first?

It's only a wishlist so why knock anything off? ;)

It's good to see that you have the Sekonic 358 first on the list.

lens and meter

Yep.

If your lens isn't working, nothing else matters. But you shouldn't have to pay twice to make it right. Try working with the Sigma folks on that one.

After that, a meter will help you tremendously.

I wouldn't buy more lighting accessories unless/until you have a specific need. I don't see any advantage in umbrellas vs. your softboxes besides portability. If that's what you need, umbrellas are cheap enough.

There are other ways to create a big wall of light besides a giant octabox. Hang up a white sheet and shoot the light at it, or through it.

I'm going to send the lens in for service; seems like the cheaper way to go. After that, the LM is up next in the list I think. I get jealous of Shooterman's octo, but he also has a wife that occasionally poses for him:eek:

Here's what I use, just nylon fabric on PVC... (you can take the octabox off your list now...:))

show me the light behind it. Won't I lose a lot out the sides without the elinchrom reflector directing it forward?

The light I'm using right now is just my 580EX. The diffusion panel is ideally used with a barndoor, which I'm planning on getting at the same time as my first strobe. Scott Smith swears by this panel as the most effective -- because most creatively controllable -- modifier out there.
