hey all,

Will be shooting a charity golf event tomorrow and its supposed to be a very sunny day.

I have to shoot about 80 people by myself then process (add a logo) and print 5x7's all before they go home in the afternoon and thus need to reduce my time processing which means I need to increase the number of keepers. I've created two actions in CS3 (one for portrait and one for landscape) that'll slap on the logo, flatten it, then print. I just need to choose which pictures to process and the rest is automated.

I have rarely ever shot in Av mode and have a question about using a CPL. What do I need to do in order to ensure this automated program exposes properly? I will not have time to chimp, and will be firing multiple frames constantly. To make matters worse, I'll be using a 5D with its piss poor 3fps :(

In normal circumstances I'd shoot in M, chimp, adjust, shoot, chimp, fire s'more. But I cant this time..

All suggestions are very welcome!

Thanks!

Not sure what CPL stands for.

Sunny weather + golf = golfers with hats + hat shadows.

Before the event starts, take some test shots of someone with a hat on and spot meter their face under the hat shadow and then chimp. +2/3 EC usually does the trick, though the trade off for decently exposed faces is blown out lighter colors.

CPL = Circular Polarizing filter

Test shots in the beginning wont really work due to the variety of light sources throughout the day. I'll be chasing golfers around and will experience shade, bright direct sun, sun behind, etc.

It'd be nice if I were able to bring a flash for fill, but I'm pretty sure I'd piss off quite a few folks.

Can't see the reason for the CPL. I'd lose it. But again, I never use any kind of filter when shooting sports. With the CPL, it'll be kinda a pain when you shift from vertical to horizontal, won't it? Why stick another piece of glass between your lens and the subject?

What lens will you be using?

As far as exposure is concerned, Av will work fine. Keep your shutter speeds >1/500s by adjusting your ISO. Dial in some + Exposure Comp to bring up the faces under the bills of caps (I normally end up with +1/3 or +2/3); watch the highlights with the LCD blinkers; be prepared to have some of the lighter shirts get a little blown out if it's a real sunny day; monitor your histogram.

Why not perform test shots under each condition? Since you're shooting AV, all you'd need to remember is clicks of EC.

Take your flash. At a "celeb" golf tourney, I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities for hammy individual and group shots.

Shoot RAW.
