I like the framing better on the second one, but the focus still looks soft. To me the lighting looks even flatter than in the first as well. You said she's only 20? Without seeing her either in other shots or in real life, I'd have to say these pictures don't do her justice either....but that's kind of a subjective call.
I wanted to tell her all those things that you guys posted, but I didn't had the heart too, poor girl
This is just very strictly my opinion, but when someone asks me something of this nature (either on the net or in real life), I'm honest with them. Especially in a situation such as this, I think it's doing a friend a dis-service to "coddle them", especially if you have the experience to see there's something wrong.
One of the reason's I post my pictures on forums such as POTN here because I want "brutally honest feedback" because I don't know any one in real life that's experienced enough to know the difference between a good shot and a bad one. If I wanted hand holding, a pat on the back and my ego stroked, I have plenty of people to do that (as do most of us). But if I had a friend who knew photography as well, if not better than I did, I would be rather upset if they saw a problem and didn't say something. A simple fact of life; we learn from our mistakes. But we can't learn from them if we don't know what they are. Next time be blunt...tell your friend what you think. If she's really a true friend, she'll not only respect you for it, she'll be grateful. And if she's not adult enough to realize that you're trying to help, then maybe she's not such a good friend after all.
Just my $.02 worth,
Jim
