so far this season, I had no chance to catch my own son pitching - the coach (my husband), has constantly been playing him during the week, and then the rules of LL require the kid to rest, so I have not had any chance to catch him pitching on the weekend in daylight.

Tonight was the first time all season I could catch him, in a late afternoon game - almost evening (close to 7 pm I think), with dwindling light and shadows galore encroaching. This was the best for the afternoon....

Now you weren't literally catching him right?

I couldn't even try to catch with a mitt in one hand and a 30D + 70-200 in the other. The facemask would probably get in the way of the viewfinder.

:D

I think you managed a fantastic shot considering the harsh lighting. Great work.

I agree...good shot considering the bad light. What settings were you at for this shot?

for overcast baseball and softball, I usually find myself shooting in Av mode (2 stops or so from wide open) along with a +1 EV. I'm also not afraid to bump up the ISO if needed. For me as long as the Shutter is 800 or higher i'm happy.

Just this afternoon i was shooting baseball and softball with near storm conditions and had my ISO at 800 to compensate. Didn't turn out to bad considering.

I'm pretty certain I was 2/3 EC, and ISO was probably hovering around 400 (or 640 can't remember which).

I was sitting in heavy shade, and whatever sun was left was shining directly on his face. The problems I was having was that although I could get faces properly exposed, I think for the most part, I blew out the highlights of the white uniforms. Even where I could faces exposed well, the shadows killed the shot because you can see the faces with the shadows superimposed over the faces. This was one shot where the shadows didn't completely overwhelm the face.

2 stops from wide open is waste of the lens IMHO. If your lens is f2.8 you shooting at f5.6. Not sure why?

I definitely shoot wide open when I'm pushed it it (indoors for example) or am looking for the shallowest DOF.

...but you get your sharpest images with any lens aprox a couple stops from wide open, and it also gives your focus plane a littler more latitude.

I've missed tack sharp several times shooting at 1.8 or 2.8 because as a person is running at me...in the time it takes for the lens to focus and fire, they've moved a couple inches out of tack sharp range. Those few extra stops make a big difference.

Pat, that is a nice capture, dusk is one of my favorite times to make a photo of pitchers especially in late afternoon. Next time you have a chance wait just a little longer for the sun to go down, you will get this nice even glow. Give it a try. Good luck

Hey thanks. I was afraid to wait for the sun to go completely, I thought I would have nothing to work with it. It may have been the way this particular field is laid out, the direction of which the pitcher has to face in relationship to the setting sun. I will take your advice and try again for this time of day. On the day of this shot, the kids were playing at a field that isn't the usual field - it was actually a make-up game from the night before - which rained out the game. I will definitely try again, especially since I can't convince the coach to pitch my son on the weekends.........:D
