I was thinking f9 was a happy medium. I was worried that if I was too open the DOF would be too small. I wanted to get the whole player in focus. I didn't want the uniform in focus and the face soft or vice-versa. 7D,

The 1st two shots have a distraction of a 2nd person in the background, you can easily remove it from the 2nd one with a simple crop...maybe a little harder on the first one. Also as the others have said, lower the f, you'd make a better shot. The last picture sums it up. The coach is almost in full focus, but the guy behind the pitcher is in full focus, and doesn't allow you to capture the full entity of the shot you wanted. Good luck with your future shots.
