I will be heading to the Palouse for two days in a couple weeks and aside from Steptoe Butte have no idea of gdod photography locations. Anyone her know of any good locations?

The Palouse is a big area, but at first thought Palouse Falls would be a nice choice albeit several hours from Steptoe. The area though is a great area for scenic views of the rolling hills, big skies, and colors and patterns of the grain crops but the latter is very dependent on the season. The winter wheat crop should be tall and green with harvest coming in about a month or so, the spring wheat may just be a mist of green against the soil as it was only planted a short time ago.

That, combined with the rolling contours can make for interesting compositions. West on Hwy 12 there are several fields of bright yellow, either canola or mustard, for a contrast. The wild flowers in the Blue mountains are in bloom. The vineyards are just starting to bud. JimE

Sweet, I was getting reports on another board that the late spring has left the area w/o any color right now and that July would be a better time to visit. I have time to visit next weekend and would really like to make the trip. Robert McCadden

This time of the year the hills should be nice and green the photos below were taken in late summer. If you have not been to Palouse Falls I would highly recommend that as well and it has a primitive campground. Besides Steptoe Butte you may also want to check out Kamiak Butte County Park which also offers camping. The Back roads have a lot to offer as well just make sure to bring a good map. Another place for information on photographing the Palouse is the Photograph America Newsletters. Canon 30D
