I select focus points as I find appropriate for different situations.
This image, (external link)for example, was shot with Servo AF, all focus points active (start tracking with the center one), Tv, 1/350 s using the EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

Well what can I say, you have all responded wonderfully :D

The extra shots posted since I looked last night (excuse the time lapse with UK and overseas) - are stunning, all of them!

I am getting on the phone in the next hour or so to order mine (so that I can read and play before our Bank Holiday next weekend :D :D

fishingjts: Thanks so much for your workflow info - even better news that you also use Elements 6. I do not do much post processing either, hence my wanting to know how much work you guys do in that respect - I do like to get as good as I am capable of first. So, one more question for you with E.6 - I take it you actually open and process the raw file in Elements 6 too, rather than another raw software package?

I have only played with raw a couple of times but dont use it all the time, so now is the time for me to get on and use it all of the time, hence my extra questions. Seems no point in getting a superb camera and only shooting jpgs LOL. I bought a new pc a couple of months ago in preparation for dealing with more processing power.

Thanks again everyone for such great responses, its helped enormously :D

Linda

UPDATE: Just phoned and ordered mine - will have it tomorrow :-)

With the my 20D I always kept it on a single AF point, usually the center point... That was the only way I got any kind of consistent results... with the 40D I turn on ALL the AF points and AI Servo and shoot with confidence! It is a night and day difference over the 20D!

I grabbed this one Friday... so far my absolutely my favorite!

Hi fishingjts I was looking at the EXIF on this shot and seen it was at 150mm, were you using a 70-200 f2.8 with IS?, I was wondering were you using the IS for motor sport?

Owning both the 30D and 40D, I gotta say +1 for the autofocus. Since all of the focus points are cross type, you can use them with confidence.

Don't you have some rebates working on your side of the pond?!?!

Hi there, and thanks - thats great news with the af points, another confirmation of what those above has said.

Yes, we have the Canon cashback offer until 30 June of £100 so that brings it down to £499 after the cashback (currently getting it for £599). I am also then going to sell my 300D so will get some money back from that, but will keep my 350D. Sounds a good plan, yes?

I will feel sad about selling my 300D as its still a good camera, just lacking refinements and a bit slow, but AF seemed more reliable than the 350D.

I thought now was a good time before the cashback runs out, or if there is a last minute rush on the 40D and stocks get low and I miss the boat with the offer.

Thanks again.

Linda

If you're not aware of it Spring Rebates begin this Sunday the 18th: http://media.the-digital-picture.com …on-Spring-2008-Rebate.jpg (external link) .

They're instant rebates too. You get $200 off a 40D.

FishingJTS. Your thing shows you allow photo editing so I change the WB in your pic a little. I think the first one looked a little yellow.
