I live in Hawaii, and we only have one Canon HQ. My camera and L's were registered. If somebody decides to take it into the Canon shop for fixing, cleaning, ect... would they be able to know if the camera belongs to me or that its reported stolen?

Its unfortunate that some of the locals steal from the tourists here. Quite embarrassing if you ask me; tourism is our #1 income...

I know I could of contacted Canon, but the response is much faster on POTN, and I can lurk on the other threads

It's unlikely. It's more likely that your camera will be sold on and not used by the thief.

But of course you should phone your Canon place. At least if you give them the serial number, they'll keep a look out for it coming in.

Register these numbers with the cops. Most likely place it'll be sold is a pawn shop or e-bay. Selling on E-bay means they will likely display the serials, and also means a possible felony and federal case rather than local. Do report everything to the police though.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yeah, I am doing this very thing. One of the items stolen from my car had a serial number and was quite unique piece of electronics, so I keep browsing Ebay (not 100000 items to go though, thank goodness) hoping those chums will show up sooner or later. Then, I will patiently get some information, and go to the police. Do not alert Ebay before the police.

Otherwise they will cancel the auction due to terms and conditions, and they will not prosecute the seller, because they are not you (or me, the rightful owner). Instead, try to maintain contact with the seller (ask for prices, details, be general and keep your cool) and then WALK IN your local Police Department. Explain how much it costs, why it is important that you lost it, and ask them how they can help you. (Share any emails or other info you may have gathered).

Only after that, you may contact Ebay and request all of seller's information. Otherwise, you'd be screwed.

But most of all good luck, and keep an eye peeled, it would be great to find them and give them a big Hawaiian can of Whooop-arse.
