I was asked to Photograph a "Yellow-Tie Event" How Much $$??

So I was asked to quote a Yellow-Tie event for the city I live in. Here are some specifics:

- Roughly 4 hours
- Pictures will be used for advertising, newspaper & for sale.
- The city wants a CD/DVD and copyright of all the images.

These are the only specifications I know right now, but they want me to quote this.


I have never had to quote an event like this so any help would be appreciated. How much should I charge?

Yikes...I would say no just based on the fact that they are going to make money off your images when they resell them! You shouldn't touch that job for less than $4000.

I wouldn't give them a copyright. I'd give them a license to use the image for a set period of time.

They're for advertising, so I presume they plan to generate some kind of revenue from the use of your images. With this in mind, you might want to increase your price accordingly.

4 hours of coverage time, plus any post production work - say another 4 hours ontop of that at least - 8 hours total. If you charge $100.00/hour that's $800 bucks for your time.
License will be a separate charge, say around 1.5-2k, depending on what they're using the images for. If they're going to make money off of your images, probably a lot more than that.

Personally I'd do it for 200/hr because the odds of me getting a good shot that i liked at an event like that would be close to nil, so maintaining the rights would mean little to me. If i did get a great then I just wouldn't turn that one over, but I have no morals or sense of ethics.
