No problem, with the 50 1.4 you can focus manually at any time. It's called FTM (Full Time Manual). It is standard in all USM lenses but 1.4 has it too although it is Micro-USM.
I've never read that, but it makes sense now because I've noticed when I accidentally turn the 1.4 it doesn't make that grinding noise. I like the fact that you can leave it on auto-focus all the time! I hate having to make sure a lens is on auto before using it; inevitably you forget.
Also, I just picked up my new 20d yesterday - woo-hoo!!! HEre's a sample pick I took while playing around with the settings and reading the manual. 50mm 1.4 @2.2 iso400, standard exposure and custom WB, before trimming my toe-nails:
