I see from another post that the EZ will only work in manual mode with 20D? What does that mean for someone who has never used an external flash and is using it for the first time?

The 420EZ doesn't support E-TTL which Canon Digicams require.

E-TTL uses a pre-flash to meter the scene. An E-TTL flash always fires twice in rapid succession. The first flash bounces back to the camera. The camera measures the strength of the reflected light and then from that, it determines how bright the second flash should be for a perfect exposure.. (hopefully :) )

This requires the flash to communicate with the camera. The 420EZ doesn't support pre-flash and therefore doesn't speak the same E-TTL language... It will work, but will always flash at full power.

Can i manually adjust teh power?

You can only use EZ Series flashes in Manual Flash mode on Canon digital cameras.

I beleive you must mean the 540 EZ or the 430 Ez, It only works in manual mode on G series and A-TTL for Eos digital. The 540 EZ is comparable to the 550 EX. The new systems have a more sofisticated metering systems which you will loose. For basic photography the the 420 EX is good. Find out which one it is, if it is the 540 Ez then it's a great flash.
