Foggy Sunrise

I guess sunrise shots are a dime a dozen but I would like some feedback on this shot if you would. While I took half a dozen shots and this was the best I must admit I was not shooting with a lot of confidence that they would turn out OK. I would appreciate any technical advise on how to improve shooting into the sun or other high contrast situations.

I really love the look of the shot along the fence line. I'd guess that the composition might look better with the sun to one side or the other (on the thirds), and if you could wait for some clouds to obscure the sun a bit more, it would look even more dramatic.

What lens was this with by the way?

With a crop you can move that sun.its a lovely photo.I bet being there was even better.

I cropped, levels of contrast, and retouched some dust spots....

Yes - the right end of the image was getting redundant. The crop gave it better balance, and I like the darker rendering.

Agree crop looks much better. Pete the lens was a Canon EFS 17-85. It was a great morning and I was lucky to be in a nice place at the right time.

Is that the new IS model and if so, how do you like it? I'm toying with picking up the new 70-255 IS...

BTW...great shot. I liked the cropped version too.

Great photo. A little tighter crop would be my suggestion but looks really good overall as well. Maybe a little more curves and contrast in PP?

Yes it is an IS version - EFS 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM, but this is not an L series lens however its no to bad.

Hehehehe...if I thought it was the L series, I wouldn't have asked! LOL!!! I was guessing that it was one of Canon's new "cheapies". I've been reading some good things about them but I haven't heard from anyone who actually owned one yet. I'm sure the majority of the "L snobs" out there are probably going to slam them so I wanted to hear some comments from a real person (LOL!).

BTW...when I said I was thinking about the 70-255, I meant the 55-250mm IS for $279...just had a brain fart when I posted that last message I guess. I do -a lot- of hand held shooting so having an IS lens would be a plus and now that there's a few that are actually afordable, I'm hoping to get the 55-250 within the next month .
