Just bought a new 40D with 17-85 lens. Thought I'd try a shot or two, and see what hints/tips people give so I can "learn the ropes" of a decent SLR.

This shot was taken whilst I was reading the manual...A few of my wife's bangles placed on a file by the table...

C&C welcome...

To me is a little underexpose... and probably would try to get more of the ring in focus (the one with the heart) i think theres to much blur... but that´s just my opinion.
keep shooting!

It is clear that you were trying to isolate and grab the eye for the heart hallmark.

However, in so doing the bulk of the image is out of focus. In my opinion, it would be more appealing to the eye to have more of the rings in focus.

Next, if you are going to all that trouble to shoot the rings, it would not be that difficult to create a seamless background of an appropriately harmonius color.

Thanks for the critiques, I was just testing the differing settings of the camera. I just placed them on a folder, on the table and took a shot. I'll try to get more of the rings in focus next time, and see how it comes out - with a seemless background too.

Cheers
