Some glorious weather recently had the butterflies buzzing, but I wonder how they'll manage with today's sudden drop in temperature of 10C (18F).
At least I have some photos. The first is a brown argus, the second a marsh fritillary. Both were taken with my current butterfly lens of choice, a 20 year old 'beercan' 70-210 F4 with fitted Canon 500D close up lens. C&C appreciated.

#1 is a lovely shot Mike, not so keen on the composition on #2 though (everything else is good).

Hi Eccles both wonderful shots, well done finding the marsh fritillary. A really beautiful butterfly, something I've never seen
I've never seen a brown argus before either but there is a site in North wales so will hopefully see one soon

Thanks all. It was an evolutionary thing. I used the 500D with a Canon S3, then when I defected to Sony and got the DSLR I didn't have a true macro lens for a while so I got a 58/55 step down ring and used the 500D with a 75-300 zoom. The 75-300 has been sold on, and I have a replacement 75-300, plus the 70-210 which is a real gem. I also have a Sigma 105 macro, but it's stripped the AF ring gear and I'm waiting for a replacement ring, and to be honest the 70-210 + 500D works better for larger stuff anyway.
It's worth mentioning that damned stripped gear. Be careful with second user Sigma macro lenses. Mine was pretty cheap, and Sigma are sending me a replacement gear ring whose price wasn't too horrendous, around £8UK, but don't go bidding silly amounts on ebay for Sigma macro lenses unless you're prepared to fix it if it goes wrong.

Great shots Mike.

Yeah, I wonder how all the insects are going to fare with yet more of a drop in temp today, its really chilly now.

Thanks again for the comments, all.

Did you do selective sharpening

No. I've done so in the past to avoid halos when the subject is against the sky but this time I just used the basic Photoshop sharpening option after converting the raw original and resizing for display.

EXIF states no flash, must have been pretty bright.

Yes, these were shot on different days but both days were bright and sunny.
