Should I add the weight of the pack mule to the weight of my camera equipment?

When flying overseas my bag is generally over 10kg - (above the max 7kg) weight. And that's with my Sigma 120-300 in my suitcase also.

I'm generally leaving two lens each time I go and shoot.
Leave behind 12-24 and 120-300, and take just 1D, 17-40, 24-105, 50mm 1.4 and that covers a fair bit. The tripod itself is awkward to carry, and considering buying a VERY small one to tuck away in my bag

If I'm going out expressly to take photos then I take what I need which can be up to 100lbs of stuff including lighting. If I'm doing other stuff and might snap some photos for personal use, probably my 20D and 28-70L or Rollei 6006 and 80mm f/2.8.

Yup...do you need me to take a picture of it? :)

Nope. I'm just surprised that a 5D plus 24-70, 70-200F4IS and a 580exII flash in a Velocity 7x bag is so light (7-8 lbs.).

i carried a 30D, 24-70, 70-200 2.8 IS, 17-40, a dell E1505, and external harddrive for 5 months no problem. Granted i took out the laptop and harddrive out when i was photographing during the day.

I would say it weighed like 20 lbs

Cheers

My camera, lenses and two flashes go in my one bag, and the rest of the non-tripod/stand equipment goes in another, like chargers, cords, other flashes, etc. Then another bag for the tripod and light stands. For some shoots I have everything along, but for places like shooting by the bellagio water show, I will take my main bag and the tripod/stand bag with tripod and 1-2 stands inside. It's not unusual for me to haul 30lbs of equipment around for an hour of standing, walking, etc.

It's actually an 8x so its just a tad heavier.

5D w/battery 31.6oz
70-200 F4IS 26.8oz
24-70 33.5oz
580exII 16.7oz incl batteries
Velocity 8x - 32oz

total of 140.6oz = 8.78lbs

After I add in an extra battery, a few filters, hoods, pen brush, i'm probably up to about 11lbs.

When I travel, what I'll usually do is bring a Crumpler bag and take all the lenses. That bag is probably 25lbs or so. I'll then put this velocity bag in the suit case and use it for the day trips. I tried just using the crumpler and by the end I'm tired. btw, if you do plan to carry alot of weight, there's definitely an advantage using a backpack type as opposed to a sling/messenger bag.

We should all go with Mike- he can lug the gear :-)

How do you go with stablization Mike- do you use a tripod, or would it be easier to use a monopod in a wheelchair?

I'm actually pretty stable without a tripod, but the arms on the chair helps me brace my camera. I've taken many hand-held shots with my 5D/300mm @ 1/80 sec and they're sharp. :D

I do use the tripod for my landscape shots though.

I just got my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. I will see how I like using it, but it's freakin' heavy at 1380g. I might eventually "upgrade" to Canon 70-200 f/4 IS depending on how much usage I get out of f/2.8. With the lens attached my bag is stuffed now from top to bottem, I know the f/4 lenses are quite a bit shorter, as my old Tamron 75-300 wasn't a heck of alot bigger than my old Canon 17-85.

If you have to carry your photographic gear with you all day, every day, for many many weeks. You will be doing a great many things, but photography is definitely one of them.

What would be your weight limit for the all your photographic gear?

Depends on what I'm planning to shoot and what quality I need.

weight is not much of an issue compared to bulk. i dun mind lugging a heavy bag but i do mind lugging a bulky cumbersome bag. most of the time my gear bag is fine, its the added tripod that i have to sling over my other shoulder which 'bothers' me.

about fifteen pounds I still remember the bruises on my shoulder from lugging the thirty+ pounds to and from Africa.. Not worth it for day to day excursions.
