I'm wondering if anyone here knows if they'll be bringing out a new version of this printer soon (i9900). Since I seem to keep printers for insanely longtime (current s600 is over 5 years old,) it might be worth it for me to wait a few months to buy the next thing out. If its well over a year from now, I'll just just buy this right now.

Thanks guys.

Canon has a new version out (in Japan) but has not released it outside of that yet (iP9150?)

It uses the BCI-7 ink set.

I am suspecting they are trying to get R+D money back before sending to states where we will rudely find and point out all of the problems with the new printer and ink. That or they are trying to gear up production of the ink first.

Best guess at this point is late Summer, Early Fall announcement,if they release this version. They have been known to release different versions of same basic printer (ala the ability of Eupoeans to print on CDs that we in the states can't do with otherwise same basic printer.

So if you can wait until September then wait, but don't wait much past that.

Ilford Classic Pearl paper vs. Ilford Printasia

Several moths ago I printed the same image using both papers.
Initial results were identical ( to my eye ).
I left them exposed on the window seal for several weeks.
There was noticable fading on Printasia, no fading on Classic Pearl after about 2 weeks.
Seems that at some point fading on Printasia has stopped, but still, result is awful.
I have some prints done on Printasia, that were stored in abum . No visible fading after several months. Images were printed on Canon i9900.
If you are after long lasting prints, Ilford Classic Pearl paper is the way to go. I love it.

Will the BCI-7 inks be available for the i9900 or just the new printer ?
The photo looks like the same configuration.

I have now used close to a thousand sheets of "Kirkland Professional Glossy Inkjet Photo Paper" - this is Costco's house brand. It gives beautiful results on my Canon S9000 with inkproducts' continuous inking system and inks ( http://www.inkproducts.com/ (external link) ).

Best part is that the cost per 8 1/2" X 11" color print is about 25 cents, including paper and ink. The paper is $19 per 125 sheets, and the ink is about $1.00 per 13 ml (ink tank size) when bought in 16 oz bottles. (13 ml of the photo colors will make will make about 42 letter-sized prints - the other colors many more.)

(I have no commercial relationship with either company, other than as a satisfied coustomer.)

I have used the Ilford Smooth Pearl paper (a3 size) and have had no issues at all with curving after printing

I had some problems occasionally from my s9000, but no problems with curving from Ilford papers (Gallerie Classic or Printasia) of those printed on i9900, really don't know why the slight difference unless it is a batch issue thing with the paper.

Sorry to drudge up a long dead post, but I just got a i9900 used and am looking for large format paper for it. It seems that Ilford Pearl papers are the chosen favorite here. What I am curious about is what print setting you use with it in the driver? Leave it on regular glossy, photo paper pro, or photo paper plus? I don't have any in my hands yet, but maybe I'm asking too early and it tells in the paper packet....

Visit the Ilford web page (external link) and download the profile for the i9900. Follow the instructions that come with it; if you're using a Mac, you set these once, then in the print dialog window you can save these settings (I call mine "Galerie Smooth Pearl") and from then on you can get these settings from the pull-down in the dialog.

Now I'm kicking myself in the shin... I ran out at lunch and bought some Ilford Premium Glossy Inkjet paper from Compusa. They had the pearl, but only in 8.5x11, and I wanted 13x19 and this was all they had. I didn't realize the gallerie paper would be that much different. The prints look pretty good except for 2 things. In the blurred out background areas, I get noticable banding (not present in the sharp focus area). Also, in the dark areas (near black) I get misc. little black puddles. I've run print head cleaning and alignment to make sure all is printing fine there. Everything looks good. The prints look pretty good too, except for those two nuances. Sadly, those are 2 things that would make me never sell a print to a customer. Anyone else had similar issues? In the few 5x7 prints I put out on Canon Photo Paper Plus, neither of those issues was present.

That's a bummer.

I only use the Galerie Pearl 13x19, but I also use Kodak Ultra semi-gloss 8.5x11. Both are very nice papers. I'm sure others are good, too, but I'm happy enough with these that I won't change.

Yeah, I will have to try the pearl next time or when I need more letter size paper. I've got tons of leftover 4x6 Canon paper to go through still. I also found that even though the carton said to use Photo Paper Pro setting, the website says to use Photo Paper Plus setting. Hopefully that will get rid of my banding, as I just printed an 8x10 on Canon PP Plus and have no issues.
