Manfrotto 055XPROB center column?

Hello Everyone!

I'm almost ceratin I'm going to go out to my local camera shop tomorrow and pick up a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod along with the 488RC2 ballhead.

Just two quick questions......

-What's the advantage of being able to position the center column in the tripod out at a 90' angle, parallel to the ground?

-How do you get the camera mounted on the tripod down to the listed 3.5" from the ground? You must have to remove the center column and mount the camera and ballhead to the tripod some way.

go through the pages, its a good review of the 190 but the 055 is just a beefer version, same tripod in regards to how it works.

I have a 055xprob as well. You'll love it.

1. The horizontal use is for close-to-ground tasks, or when you need to shoot straight down at a 90 degree angle.

2. You get it low, but pushing a stopper on each leg, which than opens up all three with maximum spread. You then mount the center column in a horizontal position.

Using my Bogen/Manfrotto 3021BPro (forerunner to the 055XProB), I have supported my camera on the opposite side of a wall - in other words, hanging the camera over a 500-foot cliff on the other side of a stone wall at Yosemite - to take a supported shot in a place where I would not go myself.

You can also use the feature to photograph pages from a book or something similar, with the lens aimed straight down.

Curious as to why you would consider the most expensive 055 legs without knowing the benefits.

But either way its a great tripod. Though using it at its lowest settings is still a pain in the butt.

I'm looking at these legs because I love to walk around our lake and take pictures early in the morning or later in the evening and need to get a tripod. I have looked at the tripods at walmart and best buy, but I am the kind of person who only likes to buy things once.

Whenever a tripod question comes up here on this forum, the 055XPROB and the 488RC2 come up as a great set.

I don't know whether I should be looking at the 190XPROB, but the 055XPROB are beefier and sturdier. I think they would hold up nicely if put in a padded case and rode around in the basket on my bicycle.

What head are you using Rehuel?

snatiep. You won't regret the Manfrotto 055XPROB. It is an excellent choice of tripod and as you say, looked after it will last you a life-time of photography. The head I use with mine is the Manfrotto 141RC. It is a slightly older head and has the very 'dumpy' handles which I love. Makes the whole grip thing solid. These can still be purchased and is worth looking at as they can be picked up very reasonably priced.

The boom arm is excellent and has lots of uses as has been proved here with the replies you have had. I bought the genuine Manfrotto zip bag for mine and with the carrystrap it is easy to carry over a shoulder.

The only real difference between the 190XPROB and the 055XPROB is the height (and price of course). 190XPROB is not as tall but just as sturdy and if you want to carry it around in a bike, it might be easierand it will last just as long as the 055.

The ball head on the picture is the 486 but I have since upgraded to the 488RC2. I love my new combination, the 488 is slightly bigger and has a Pan action which the 486 did not offer and of course, the quick release system which I absolutely love.

Hi Rehuel.... all the reviews I have read for the two manfrotto tripods state the 190XPROB is not as sturdy as the 055XPROB. The 055 is heavier and taller. They are both excellent tripods though and I wouldn't hesitate recommending either.

Technically you are correct but there isn't a colossal difference between the two in those area. The 055 is taller as it has 4 section legs instead of 3 like the 190 and this is what makes it heavier. This is also what makes the legs wider and in turn beefier. The weight difference that they can handle isn't that much and this is why I made the earlier statement. I don't view or make choices on certain things when the difference is minute. If you are a tall person, get the 055 if you are a shorter person, get the 190 and stick what ever head you want on them and be happy. This is how I see these two tripods.

the price difference is only $10 in my country between them
i'm 180 cm and using 450D which one is more suitable for me ?

055 should suit your height most......

Are you sure about that? I use my 055XPROB very often, and I'm reasonably certain that it only has 3 section legs.
