[EDITED] May 18th....

comparison of site to site

Henrys:

Qty Item Each Total
CANON SPEEDLITE 430EX FLASH $299.99
CANON EF-S 60MM 2.8 MACRO USM LENS $599.99
CANON EOS-40D W/28-135 IS USM LENS $1,599.99
LOWEPRO SLINGSHOT 200AW $109.99
SANDISK 2GB EXTREME III CF CARD $49.99 $99.98 Remove Item

---------------

SubTotal: $2709.94

Aden

EOS 40D w/ 28-135mm IS $1,399.99...............+ $200 rebate
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens $549.99............... + $50 rebate
430EX Speedlite $299.99............... + $50 rebate
SlingShot 200 AW $109.99
Extreme III 2GB CompactFlash $54.99 $109.98
Subtotal $2,469.94

Now from what i understand with Aden, is that the price listed is their sale price PLUS i can still send in for the rebate, as their site says prices listed is before rebate, so that is another $200 off the 40D combo.... and othe items, so another $300 knocked off...

After rebates (if i ever get em from Canon) Subtotal $2,169.94

great, now i am thinking something else.. i plan to have this camera for at least 3-5 Years (unless it gets stolen too..lol)

for that time frame... could i consider maybe a 5D ? (i havent heard any news on a 6D or anything...) just the thought of buying a .. 3 year old camera model...

[EDIT] not going to bother with a 5D, just incase Canon does annouce a 4D/6D in sept at Photkina.

Neither of those lenses are that great, why not just buy the body and get a better lens. There are plenty of lenses out there for $300-$500 that are much better than both of those lenses. There's a local shop here that is selling the 40D with a Sigma 17-70 for $1399. Not sure how that would work for you guys on the north side, but that's a pretty good combination!

What about this option?
http://www.henrys.com …oryId=10429&itemID=240389 (external link)

I think you might just as well consider a 5D; its replacement is likely going to be a lot more expensive, and you probably can sell it at a price, if and when you do want to upgrade, that makes your "rental" look very cheap.

Do go for this one in that case:
http://www.henrys.com …oryId=10429&itemID=191851 (external link)
Provided it is within budget, of course. As an alternative the 28-135 IS may be a good option too.

I have both the 40D and 5D, got the latter only a few days ago (good cashbacks over here), and although the 40D is not a bad camera, ok, it is very good :D, and has some very interesting options, I am currently wondering why I never got the 5D any sooner, especially considering the stuff I like to shoot a lot (landscapes, low light, macro, portraits, still lifes, products). Of course, when it came out it was twice the price it is now after cashback, and it seems outdated, but considerign my experiences with only recently released cameras and lenses, I have learnt my lesson. I'll wait for a year at least after its release with relatively slow moving stuff (like fast L-primes, FF cameras, the more advanced APS-C cameras, etc.), before adding it to the bag. This means that if the 5D II is released at Photokina, I will only consider getting it in about 18 months time from now. It just takes that much time to iron out the bugs with the complex cameras of this time. So, IMO, it is worthwhile to get the hang of a FF camera right now. Another advantage is that the price will have come down from the initial advised retail price to a more sensible amount by that time too.

Kind regards, Wim

nice site, but too far for me, with camer gear i prefer to walk in :) i will be in Toronto Ontario, my home originally, so buying in that loca..

Good points, and most new features in the 5d replacment likely wont be that huge.... how is the digimark II vs III chip though?

i like the idea of a full frame, i do solely personal photography... but full frame sounds so nice! and a 5D, would make my friend drewl\\\my buudget varies really, when i got my 20D i toped out at 3500CAD, but that also included the battery griup, which i almost need to have, i have large hands and with out a battery grip the camera just doesnt feel right... have to see how cash works out i should have a bout $6k total to go to toronto (burial of my mother kind of trip) but i also want to get a PS3 for some grand theft auto 4 gaming :)..mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

the one thing about the 40D is live preview, that could be really useful for macro

okay, so i am going to lean towards the 40D, as i can get some good lense for the $1000 less price tag..

question, i had read the 60mm canon macro 1:2 for like $600, doesnt work on crop cameras?

Hi Mathiau,

There only is an EF 50 F/2.5 CM (Compact Macro) which goes to 1:2, and which is probably less than half the price you indicate. Since it is an EF-mount lens, it will work with the 40D, as all EF (and EF-S) mount lenses will work with the 40D.

However, I'd suggest you'd get the EF-S 60 F/2.8 Macro instead. Slightly more expensive, but has ring USM, IF (Internal Focusing, i.e., the lens alwasy stays the same size), a larger WD (Working Distance) than de 50 CM has, and goes to 1:1 straight out of the box. This particular lens was designed for APS-C cameras like the 40D.

Note that the 50 CM has a rather slow, AFD type focusing mechanism, which is rather noisy too, and it extends quite a lot when focusing nearby. Plus, in order to get beyond 1:2 , you'd have tp get the EF Life Size Converter, which is about the same price as the lens itself, or a 25 mm extension tube.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

that was the one i was thinking of.

EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
http://www.usa.canon.com …egoryid=155&modelid=11156 (external link)

foir some reason i thought it could do 1:2, bee reading on so many lenses i cant get it straight!

i do like the idea of the mp-e, but if i get the ef-s, then i can get a better walk around lense if i buy just the body, i could also then get the battery grip, extra battery and a flash also all at once instead of waiting to the end of my trip to see what i have money left over for.

Ok :D. Very good choice indeed! :D

i do like the idea of the mp-e,

The MP-E 65 F/2.8 is very much a specialized lens. I'd suggest you wait with that until you have mastered macrophotography, and are really prepared to spend more on it, and only then buy this macro-only lens and a macro flash, or two Speedlights.

but if i get the ef-s, then i can get a better walk around lense if i buy just the body, i could also then get the battery grip, extra battery and a flash also all at once instead of waiting to the end of my trip to see what i have money left over for.

I assume you are considering the EF-S 17-55 IS then? Or the EF 28-135 IS?

Kind regards, Wim

i would say i am good at macro, nothing like lord v, my previous rig which was stolen was a 20D, tokina 100mm macro MF, speedlight 430EX, battery grip and such :)

i just love the idea of greater then 1:1, i took alot of macro pics and wish they were larger :)

but since this trip back i am spending most time with my sister and my new nephews, i do want to have a good lense for that, and also some traveling we are doing, nigra falls, and such since i am bringing my girlfriend up from costa rica, this is why i am thinking the ef-s 60, and then the other $500 or so i can get a good all around lense.. but stll undecided on that, i do want a faster lense though a 2.8 walk around would be awsome, but i know the price can start to get high....

in my head i figure around $3k total i can spend on gear, $3500 max, i just hate taxes too, i was going to also get a play station 3 so i could play grand theft auto IV, but i can get that any time, my gear is more important for me.

(prices are CAD)

    Canon EOS 40D Body $1,319.00
    Canon Speedlite 430EX $319.95
    Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens $119.95
    Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Le.. $589.95
    Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.. $649.95

Would i need the nifty fifty if i get the 28-135?

Total $2,998.80 - $3418 with tax CAD

plus toss in, i think around $300 for extended 3 years warrenty, mmm thats a little pricey.. argh!!!

i think i may have to settle for a combo with the 17-85 or something to bring the price down...
