OK! I give! Fill me in on Noink!

Ever since joining there has been this thing that I've seen. One of those forum things that you just gotta be apart of to get. And something I have no yet figured out.

NOINK!

All I can gather is that it's Nikon. But why Noink? Where did it come from, what does it mean. Someone fill me in please? I wanna be with the 'in' crowd.

NOINK is the closest we dare come to the word we must not speak...

Just a bit of (hopefully tongue-in-cheek) fanboy syndrome, I think. I don't suppose anybody avoids typing "Pentax" or "Sony" or whatever -- Nikon is Canon's closest competitor in sales and performance, which makes it a more likely target for cheeky nicknames. Still, I'm sure Nikon fanatics have far worse terms for Canon!

Noink is Japanese for Second Best.

Cuz you can't spell 'Noink' without 'oink'.

Having said that, only a few people here are rampant anti-Noink fanboys. I myself despise their entry level DSLR, but have quite a lot of admiration for what they have done, and what they are doing. Hell I own two Noinks myself , but you won't see 'em in my gear list!

The practical reason for using "Noink" or "Nik*n" is to steer search engines away from a mostly Canon forum when people search for Nikon.

That actually makes an astonishing amount of sense .

It is not a reference to the person, only the the brand.

I have yet to see anything negative said about Noink users on this forum, and I know a couple of members even use them, some even use both systems together.

You know, I've learned something on this thread. Thanks for starting it. I'll use N*kon when referring to it. Didn't know it messes up their users.

It would be nice to say that NOINK came about as a result of CDS's appalling typing skills, but I am sure that it was Belmondo that coined this particular epithet

That's a pretty good one. At least it's not Casio though. "Cameras made by that Calculator-WATCH company..."
