Hi
I am new to portraiture. A model has kindly agreed to pose for me. I am taking this seriously. Can any one tell what kind of reflector should I carry along? I just checked there is silver & gold. I understand that gold will be very useful for giving a sunset kind of feeling but how about silver? will it give a general white light or should I go for white for general use?? say indoor shots or park side shots or street shots.

Ebay link (external link) (Please have a look)

Thank you.

#include <iostream>
int main() {
std::cout << "POTN is the best." << std::endl;
return 0; }

Please tell me you have a flash? You will really need one.

Gold = warm light

You sig didnt mention a flash so I was a bit worried. I would go for a off shoe chord, lightstand and umbrella with a reflector since it give you a larger light source.

Even without that, A reflector will help shedloads. I would go for white. I like shooting with a white brolley and look to get a white reflector to match.

Get yourself a 5-in-1 and you'll have white, gold, black, silver, and a scrim.

www.amvona.com (external link) - 40x60 5-in-1 is $45.

x2 on that! It's what I did ... and there's no need for a flash if you're gonna use a reflector.
It's not a necessity by any means .. I love using my reflector to sometimes just fill in ..

I almost always use a soft silver or white. My 40X72'' is silver and it's my go-to reflector 99% of the time.

For outdoors, a reflector is all you need.

Also, I checked out Amvona. They have their reflectors listed as like 80% off retail. What's the catch? Are they legit?

Amvona is legit. Their equipment is not top of the line and thus the lower price. I've found that for my uses it is sufficient but I don't buy everything from them either. I have background stands, backgrounds, and reflectors from them and they are all quite nice.

They also have an eBay store (external link) with even lower prices if you like auctions.

Ghosh,,,to be honest you just can't beat a matte white reflector for that natural look..I find gold too gold and silver too harsh..

When I had my studio my favourite reflector was a sheet of 5' X 4' X 6" polystyrene..Cheap as chips from my local hardware store..The only hassle it was a real pain on location..It was difficult to transport 'cus of its size and when the wind got under it it would take off..I was doing a fashion shoot and the 5'0" 45 kilo make-up girl had one hell of a time hanging onto it at the beach with a stiff nor'easter (SE Coast NSW Australia)... Sorry,,,I'm rambling on a bit here..

Get yourself a matte white jobby,,,,you won't regret it!!

I agree with yogestee...best general purpose reflector is white.

Silver reflector is better reserved for 'glamor' shot, as it casts a very 'hot' looking light. Gold is a bit broader in suitability than silver, but does tend to go overboard with too much gold. A combo (silver with some gold) is better in providing some warmth but not overboard.

Okie, so what white reflector that you would suggest? Some thing that is portable and cheap. Dont want a costly one as I am yet to be pro. Once I start earning money from this may be I will go for a better one.

Thank you.

White foamcore sheet...can't get much cheaper than that, and have some structural strength in any breeze!
