How do you shoot a full moon?

The mistake many make is trying to get the best shot on full moon.
You're better off in one of the other phases, as there's more contrast and definition with craters becoming detailed.

Or also wait for another planet to pass by..

Given that it was a half moon in the mid to high sky, my settings (f/5.6, ISO 800, 1/800) fall into their guidelines. At 1/800 sec shutter, the benefits of a tripod and mirror lock-up are trivial, right? I shot it handheld with IS turned on (75-300mm lens @ 300mm).

I've really been going nuts shooting the Moon with an ANCIENT 400mm Vivitar manual focus prime lens.

I shot this tonight.. obviously the focus is off and it's a throw-away, but I noticed the green ring. Is that chromatic aberration?

That's great. It still feels like cheating to me, to take the moon from one image and the stars from another. But still, the image of the moon itself is amazing.

EDIT: Oh, and it's a stitch of 15 smaller photos.
