The kid has a nice swing half way through in pic 2. Note the back toe is just off the ground - like a pro. Nice flexion in the elbows. Head on ball. About all I'm qualified to critique.

Do you want to freeze the motion of the ball and bat, or do you want a little motion blur to imply action? Either way, I would start by selecting a shutter speed for the task, and a good overall aperture (f/8?) to get the DoF you want. Then mess with ISO if need be. You probably want to shoot in manual mode. The second image seems to have better exposure balance between the dark shirt and the white pants - also, because of the position of the sun, the white pants fall into shadow during the swing (like in image 2 especially) - so you can expose for the shirt if there is shadow detail you want to preserve and the white pants won't completely blow out - if you shoot raw, you can also recover the white pants easier with the highlight data - if you block your shadows you have limited ability to recover them. You definitely do not want to lose all of the highlight data in the ball or the arms/skin so not too heavy on exposing for the shirt.

Have fun!

Kirk

I would like to freez the ball I have been shooting in AV mode trying to keep the shutter speed up around 2500 if I get 2500 off the paints then aim at the shirt I get 1200 to 1600 ss

Thanks Tim

If you ask me, the 2nd one looks too washed out...i.e. the darks are too bright.

I generally meter for the face to properly expose the face. The uniform is secondary. I would also open the aperture wide open to blur the background as much as possible and try to keep shutter over 1/1000 by raising ISO to achieve that (unless playing under lights where that shutter speed is impossible).

Meter off the grass. If shooting batters that are in shade be sure to also meter grass in shade. I usually shoot M mode and adjust to have the grass at about +1/3 showing on the needle (using spot meter).

Shoot wide open. Backgrounds are always busy in baseball. You want to do everything you can to blur out the background.

Select ISO to be at 1/1000 or better for little league, 1/2000 for college and up.

From Bryan Peterson's The Perfect Picture

Meter off green grass and set exposure to -2/3. If you do not have green grass to meter off of you can meter off the palm of your hand (in the same light you will be shooting the subject) and set exposure to +1. When you move your camera back to the subject the camera will tell you everything is wrong, it is lying to you.

It means the camera is shooting in an auto metering mode with evaluative metering set. Basically you are pointing the camera at the scene and letting it try to guess what the best exposure is.

When you ask 'what should I meter off of' it means you should be selecting certain tones in the scene using the spot meter and adjusting the settings to expose the tones as you want them exposed.
