Should i keep my 420EZ if i get a Wein wireless transmitter?

Hi guys,

I have met myself with a problem when i purchased the 420EZ speedlite flash.. ( not the EX) to use with my canon20D. the problem with the EZ flash is that it doesnt speak the same TTL language as my camera so it cant sync up with my 20D to have automatic flash.

So my qusetion is, if i purchase a wein wireless transmitter to connect my 420ez flash to my 20D, would that solve the miscommunication problem between my 420 EZ flash and my 20D?

I'm not sure which Wein product you had in mind, but if you're hoping you'll magically get ETTL operation out of it, better stop hoping. The only thing you'll be able to do is to trigger the 420EZ. You'll have to manually set the flash power.

The most reliable 3rd-party triggering system is radio-controlled, like Pocket Wizard. Infrared systems like the Wein come next. Wein offers several different types of infrared systems, some with coded signals to prevent spurious triggering. You'll need a transmitter that usually goes on the camera's hotshoe and a receiver that connects to the flash.

Because the 420EZ does not have a PC sync connector port, you'll need a female hotshoe adapter with either a PC sync port or a miniphone plug if you decide you use Pocket Wizard.

Frankly, none of this is worth the trouble. A Wein wireless system will cost as much or more than a 420EX flash which will work perfectly with the 20D, ETTL and all. I would only go the wireless route if you want to use the 420EZ as a supplemental, off-camera flash for studio work.

I know the 540EZ will work are you sure it's not working.

The wein won't make a difference, its the contacts. make sure they are clean.

Did you buy it used, could be a problem with the unit. It should work as an ATTL instead of ETTL.

I found information on the EZ series. They will only work in manual mode if the Falsh is equipt for it.

Canon DSLRs do not support ATTL. There's no way an EZ-series flash can work other than to fire at, usually, full power.
