What should i do - Canon Support

So ive been having an issue with my 40D recently, when ever i bring the camera back from sleep, then take a picture after the shutter opens and closes i get an Error99. I called canon and they said it sounds like a problem with the shutter.

They said i can send it in, and they will probably replace the shutter. I have everything they are requesting but the receipt... I purchased this camera second hand from a POTN Forum member about 5-6 months ago. I plan on emailing him to see if he would have a copy of it, but i think the possibility might be slim.

Anyone have any suggestions, of have delt wit ha similar situation?

I don't think that the warranty applies to previously owned equipment. You could call Canon tech support and ask.

I believe that the Canon warranty is non-transferable. Try a get the receipt.

Yea, i should of asked.

I was just trying to find away around it, instead of having to pay for the repairs.

All the warranty info (the card) have not been filled out.

The card doesn't mean squat. Canon's warranty isn't transferrable, unless you lie.

if the POTN member bought it and it still is under factory warranty, you might be able to get away with asking him to send it in for you on his behalf.

Otherwise, as already stated, I don't think the warranty is transferrable. 3rd party ones, like mack, are for a small fee usually.

I am just going to have to try and find some sort of receipt... And try my luck, if not then ill just have to fork out the cash i guess.

Found the receipt, camera goes out to canon soon.

If you have the receipt and the warranty card and they both match up, then you should be able to get the repairs done.

I've done the same when I bought a lens from someone who bought it in Singapore. When it broke, I managed to get it fixed under warranty over here in the UK with no problems at all.

Just an update, the camera went to canon.. They sent it back.
After reading the paper work on what they did i had a feeling it wasnt fixed.
It said something like cleaned and focused and some other little things.

First shoot... Err99

Called canon they apologize and sent me a prepaid postage (via email)
Shipped camera back
I called them to get an update and they said they replaced the main board, not sure what else they did but it should be here today (just checked tracking)

I don't know why Canon is so ambiguous when they 'fix' something. I sent mine in once for a specific problem and when it came back they statement of repair said "cleaned, and adjusted to factory standards". It was so generic a statement I had no idea what they did, if they ever saw the same problem I sent it in for... and like the OP in this case, the problem was still there. They way they communicate what they did (generically) makes you wonder if they ever understood what you sent it in for and makes you think that no matter what you send it on for they do the same generic thing to all cameras sent in the first round just in hopes that it will fix whatever is wrong. I simply don't have the time/resources to be long without any of my cameras for very long or very often. I wish I could get a more comfortable feeling from Canon repairs, it's the one area I think they are seriously lacking.

So this is what they said they did..

"It was found that the PCB assembly was inoperative causing an error to be displayed from time to time. The PCB assembly was replaced. Other electrical adjustments, inspection and cleaning and parts replacements were carried out."

So far so good, i ran some test shots. Let the auto power off turn off, then made test shots and it worked. We will see how it goes in a little while when i go shoot some pictures.

I can't imagine they'd wanted a receipt - the 40D was released less than a year ago, wasn't it? If so, then all of them would still be under warranty, it would seem...

I would imaging it should be fixed now if they replaced the main board (most likely they did if some electrical component on it was bad. enjoy your camera now!
