You need to work on your color management.

yeah wow, i actually prefer the original. i mean, it's good that you tried to recover the areas that were bad due to overexposure, but you made the picture too yellow and too blue.

You do realize the original is the bottom one right?

Sorry, far too green and blue. Just look at the skin tones, do they look "right" to you?

Yes, actually, they do. I suspect we are looking at different impressions of this from different monitors.

To correct the color try using the Levels command in Photoshop and using the grey dropper click on the white in the guys toque. You can actually get a decent image by editing the jpeg right in ACR.

Since you don't allow image editing, here's what I did in ACR:

1. Slide the "Recovery slider" to correct for most of the over-exposure (don't go past 35).
2. Correct for remaining overexposure with the "Exposure" slider (say, -.4)
3. Use the grey dropper (White Balance Tool) and click on the white in the toque (hat)
4. Increase "Saturation" a bit (i.e., +10)
5. Crop and straighten

You can also do the above in Photoshop itself. For simple fixes ACR is sometimes easier :)

Hi,

I agree with the color comments and if it were me id also crop out the unnecsary background elemets. I feel if the subject were able to fill more of the photo it would be much better. Just my 2 cents worth.

happy Shooting,

@thekid17 - What were your intentions when you took the original and PP'ed in in photoshop? Were you trying to do some minor corrections (pretty much what Bob_A lists above) or were you going for some more experimental, adventurous moves? The PP'ed version you posted does nothing for me, personally, adventurous intent or not. The original is slightly overexposed. Without knowing where you were intending to take the image, it is difficult to comment on the PP.

I think you may get a more interesting image if the photographer were positioned lying on the ground shooting up from under the subject. You might want to try exposing for the sky and shooting with a flash to illuminate the subject, balancing the sky with the subject. That way you will have that dynamic grab kinda thing frozen against the sky. Maybe also try dragging the shutter with the flash to get some blur before the flash fires, giving the image a little more sense of motion. Shoot a bunch of different crops too.

Have fun!

Kirk

Just curious, I know it's cheap but did you really want to go with a flash that isn't compatible with ETTL II?

I'm not saying the Sunpak is a bad flash or anything, but for $150 you can get a used 420EX, which is compatible.

Take a look here to help you on your adventure. Do not pass "Go", do not collect $200 - go straight to the "Lighting 101" section.
