I'm probably going to end up buying the 40D body, since the price differences between that and 450D is less than 200 euros. 400D is of course an option too, if I can find just the body.

For the lens, these are my options:

Sigma 18-50/2.8 EX DC MACRO
Tamron 17-50/2.8 SP XR LD Di-II

Canon EF-S 17-85/4-5.6 IS USM (the kit lens)
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 DC MACRO
Tamron equivalent?

What would be the best and most useful first lens for someone just getting into DSLRs?

Personally I'd go a 17-50-odd f/2.8 - I started out with the 17-85 IS USM and was never really happy with it. Having f/2.8 gives you much more versatility.

A good everyday lens, as opposed to a 'specialty lens' such as an ultrawide, since you'll get more use out of it. I'd recommend the Tamron 17-50/2.8...its as good as their 28-75/2.8, and you're pretty much covered from a typical wide angle to a medium focal length. It also has a constant minumum aperture (unlike the Sigma 17-70, which has a variable aperture. Not familiar with the Sigma 18-50, so really say much pro/con about it. Lots of folks here use the Tamron 17-50, and it gets excellent reviews.
