Thats more powerful than the 580EXII.

I was thinking of the Photogenic 3DMax III w/ the small portable battery, what do you guys think about this product?

The Quantums...

Or you could go mobile with a portable power pack and studio strobes. Depends on how you define "portable" though. ;)

In terms of power output and color consistency the Photogenic StudioMax III are very good. Build is not all that great and the analog power level knob does not give you much in the way of accuracy. Another thing to consider with these strobes is that there is no proportional modeling light. It's either on or off and when on it's at full power. For outdoor shooting it's not an issue but if you're indoors and and are using multiple strobes it's not the most convenient thing.

The cool thing about the StudioMax III is that they make them in an AC/DC version and the strobe comes with a Turbo cable. So you can plug right in to a Quantum or the less expensive (and lower power) Photogenic battery pack.

What are you shooting and what's your budget? The Quantums are quite powerful at 150WS but it's a pricey system to get up and running.

If you don't require lots of automation, you might consider the Lumedyne or Norman offerings. Both are very powerful and have a reputation for being bulletproof.

Quantum as mentioned above.
More power can be had from the Lumedyne (external link), depending on unit used.
Slightly less power, but a bit more portable and / or cheaper maybe: Metz 60Ct4 or Metz 76Mz5.

I used a 200WS Lumedyne years ago with a Bronica SQ-A and the two made for a nice setup. Sold both in 1990. I just went to their site and was shocked to see the current price. I think I paid about $500 for mine in the early 80's.

I want to keep the price ~ 300-400.00 Anything larger, or more costly and I'll just get the AB1600's. Just bring an extension cord and a power block :)
