Purchased the lens while on vacation and used it a couple of times with great results. Was planning on using it as a longer lens outside at a wedding I am doing this coming weekend. I am renting a 17-55 as my primary lens.

Imagine my surprise when I went to use it yesterday and it appears to have STB.

You can hear the motor doing something but it sure isn't focusing. When it does decide to focus, it is painfully SLOOOOWW.

Wondering if others have encountered this problem?

Will be able to send it back for warranty repair/replacement, but it still kind of stinks for a lens to fail on the fourth or fifth use.

I take good care of my equipment, so the lens/camera has not been dropped, jostled, etc.

Well, I can understand your frustration. The positive side is, if the lens was going to fail at least it did so while still under warranty. Good luck with your wedding gig.

Tried focusing close (i.e., within a couple of feet) as well as far away and different combinations. You can hear the lens trying to do it's thing internally. BTW, it focuses fine manually.
