that it is, your timing composition and crop look just fine. it is underexposed though you always want to be able to see the players face which of course causes problems with exposure ESPECIALLY with white jerseys.

If shot in daytime you can use some fill flash to lighten up the faces (some people absolutely hate flashed football because of the shadows it creates but in this case i think its just what the photo needs

Thanks, Vlad. To be honest, I'd avoid a flash-fill with football ALL the time.

Conditions were really difficult, light-wise. Even taking a meter-reading was no good as the light was varying by about two stops with the constant change of cloud cover. Consistently metering was no help as it changed from me taking a reading to putting the meter back down, so I relied on the camera's ability. Granted, this is still a bit under-exposed. I'll keep trying.
