My wife dropped off a cd for my pictures to be printed here locally (here in Africa).
I saved all the photos using photoshop crop tool set to 8X10 300ppi. I dont remember resolution right now Im at work.

The guy at the shop says if he prints 8X10, that the printer will cut off sides, so he is printing them all at 8X12.

This seems wrong to me. 8x12 will expand my photo right? I spent time cropping these purposly at 8x10, and now Im not sure if I should stop him.

What should I do?

Did you tell the printer guy that you already cropped to 8x10? What are the pixel-dimensions of the file?

Perhaps he assumed that you didn't do any cropping, which of course would require side-chopping for an 8x10.

Yes, my wife explained it was already cropped 8x10, heh, the file name has the size in it (example--Boat8x10.jpg). I checked the size, and its 3000x2400.

It just doesnt seem logical that his printer would chop off something. I have never hired anyone to print my photos, so Im skeptical about this.

Maybe he was just trying to earn extra £££'s by making you buy bigger prints? My print shop asked me a similar question and when I'd said that they were all cropped to size they were ok and went ahead with it

Yes, it sounds to me like they just say that to every customer without thinking any more.

They've probably had so many complaints in the past about "why is my image chopped off?", that they say it to everybody just to be safe. You caught him by surprise by actually knowing what you're doing ;)

Sounds like more than a few photo shops I've been in. Their first assumption and engrained belief is that the customer knows nothing.

Hello Angry Dad;

Have you checked to ensure that the shop actually provides 8x10 prints? Not all do...

8x12 provides a standard 3:2 ratio, and they may be geared up to do that...

If they're printed on a 8x12, they should NOT expand the photos; instead you'll have a 1" white bar top & bottom, that will need to be chopped!

Not very flexible I know, but that might be the cause... Otherwise, go elsewhere, or go online... There's plenty of options around...

Cheers;

Lee
