i was talking to a photographer who suggested that i would be better off shooting in raw rather than jpeg. his theory was that i could shoot with negative f settings to get faster shutter speeds. and then be able to edit back in the exposure with a raw editor. any one else do this. or just use raw?

i origionaly posted this in the bird forum due to the fact i wanted to see if bird photographers use this. i guess the link has been moved. so answer poll in regards to bird photography

If you underexpose and then bring the exposure up in post processing you will get allot of digital noise.

I was slow to go to raw, I didn't like the slow workflow. But I was getting used to it.

Then I bought a lens and was putting it through it's paces...Shooting a bunch, so I switched back to Jpeg.

I found myself missing the lattitude of raw...I guess I made the curve, the workflow is worth the benifit.

As for the second part of your question...underexposing to gain shutter speed is an age old solution to a problem. Usful if you need it but not a good routine practice.

the second part would relate to shooting in low light early in the morning. or on very cloudy days were i dont have enough light.

I use it for flowers, nature, wildlife and landscape. Every once in a while if I want that photo for Senior Portrait or Special shot. I shoot RAW+JPEG

All my action sports are shot in JPEG only.

I used to shoot both but now RAW only. It really gives me more control over the final image than I had before.

I only shoot in RAW and see no reason to use JPEG (I don't shoot sport, so the speed is not important for me). I personally underexpose 2/3, but that's because I find that my camera overexpose if I have it correctly and not to gain shutter speed. Expose the photograph correctly, that's the best way. It's better to up the ISO instead of underexposing if the possibility is there.

If you have the time to develop your photographs instead of having the camera processor doing it, then shoot in RAW, you will notice a difference.

I shoot RAW and attempt correct exposure with each shot.

I'm an amateur and constantly learning, but I already enjoy the benefits of post processing in RAW rather than trying to re-work a jpg file that isn't quite right.

I learned RAW and never went back. (Thanks to the peopl on this forum.) If I'm shooting something that may require some immediate delivery of the pics, I'll shoot in both RAW+JPEG. That way I'll have the raw images if specific ones need some PP. RAW always seemed like this mysterious process for shooting and processing shoots. It really is soooo easy to deal with once you learn how to use the software tool(s); ala Adobe Bridge.

I slightly underexpose, not that much. Perhaps 1/3rd of a stop.

I just want to thank you guys for this thread, it really helps a lot!

Now if someone can point me to a workflow for nature/flowers/birds?

I am knee deep in the following books (jumping around until the summer when I can sit down and work through in order):

* How to Photograph Birds (How to Photograph Series) by West, Larry; Ridl, Julie
* Photoshop CS3 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book (Tim Grey Guides)
* Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS3 (Real World)

RAW, and whatever exposure adjustments are needed (which may be negative, may be positive, may be none...)

RAW and RAW only. Haven't done enough sports to decide but I would see shooting JPEG to be easier. Although sometimes I forget my settings and RAW has saved me.
