Let me know what you think. Be honest.

I like it! It's an awesome picture to start with, and I like the mix of color and B&W. My only critique would be that the colors don't really pop out relative to the dark b&w. I'd try saturating the helmet a bit more, and maybe add some fill light to get the lower edge to stand out more where it meets the shadow of the tank. Now that I write this, I remember that my office monitor (which I'm using now) is somewhat dark and contrasty, so maybe the image looks more like I'm suggesting above on a proper screen.

I have a similar photo in the POTN C&C page (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=506155), so it's good to see that other people like this style!

How did you edit the image, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the feedback - I'll take a look at yours shortly. My screen isn't calibrated so the image may be a little dark - looks ok printed A3 though - I've also a similar one of Shakey Byrne at the same meeting, but the blue of Camier's crash hat seems to work better than the white of Shakey's.

I don't mind you asking at all. First off I copied the background to a new layer in PS, then desaturated the new layer - colourising it slightly blue to help the black and white and the colour of the crash helmet.

Then I used a layer mask and painted over the crash hat to bring the colour through and pumped the saturation slightly.

Hope this helps - I'll take a look at your post in a minute.

Ta

Dave

Thanks, Dave. That sounds kind of like what I did. I'll give your technique a shot.

For mine, I copied the background, and used it in overlay mode (I think - maybe it was soft or hard light). Then I added a B&W layer and painted away the part with the car. After that, the hood was blown out, so I added another copy of the background in normal mode, but I think I reduced the opacity and filled it with a black mask, then painted away the hood to get it to show through.
