I have to turn the hood around for it to fit in the bag.

That's why I went for the Glass Taxi. I didn't really like taking on/off the hood. I just wanted to leave it on all the time. Lazy I guess...

Same here, I use a Crumpler Backpack and I also leave the hood on and ready. The lens isn't really that long (similar to a 70-200 f/2.8) so it fits into the backpack easily with camera mounted too.

I don't use a lens cap though

My lens collected dust for a few weeks once, I think it was under my bed, and I came back to find a spider web across the front of the hood hahah

I bought one of these from B&H when I ordered my lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …rge_Hoodie_Lens_Hood.html (external link)

Its a thicker nylon/elastic material so it fits on and off the lens a little more easily than the Canon one that comes with the lens. It looks like I ordered my 200 just in time, I see they went up in price to $5500.00!!!

Does anyone use this lens without the hood?

The lens itself is reasonably short, and feels nice to carry around without getting too much atention.
But, with the hood on, it becomes pretty long and big.....

I would like to carry in the bag with just a cap/cover that can protect the front element, without the hood.

Is Don Zack cap ideal for such purpose?

The optical glass that serves as protection to the front element of the lens is expensive to replace. I'd use the hood when possible. I camo it to make look smaller.

I think I use the hood mainly for protection, although I wouldn't really mind using it without the hood... Don Zeck Cap should be ideal for your intentions. You should check out his website for a video demo. It'll give you a better idea. http://www.donzecklenscap.com/ (external link)

One quick qestion...
Do you have to turn(twist) the cap to put it on and off the lens?

No, you don't necessarily have to turn(twist). It's a very nice snug fit. ;)

I asked that question because I was wondering if the caps can come off accidentally in a carrying bag from shifting around a little.

In othere words, is it firm enough that it doesn't come off easily?

Yes, it's firm enough that it doesn't come off easily. It's a very nice snug fit. I think the fit becomes even firmer if you turn it. But I just snap it on/off, because it is already nicely fitting. No need to turn.

I used to shoot with 500 C/Ms so the weight isn't all that bad to me anyway + I'm a pretty big guy.

A hood keeps all unwanted light from striking the front element. You spend all this money on really good contrasty glass and not to use the hood kinda defeats the purpose. I mean even small amounts in dim rooms can have an effect. Hood always for me.
