here is question i am sure thats been asked.. but is hard to put a "search" in for.

ive seen the test charts on dp-review comparing the sharpness of the 70-200mm 2.8 ii to the 200mm 2.0...but sharpness isnt everything... so does anyone have any real world comparison shots between the two?

im shopping again and im thinking about buying the 200mm 2.0 again (never should have got rid of it).. but that was before the new 70-200mm 2.8 ii came out.

Im thinking of taking my photography more serious and starting a business.. so im thinking the investment would be great for weddings and such.. however the 70-200 is of coarse more versatile... especially with my 2 year old growing up and chasing her around seaworld, the park and other places..

when i had the 200mm 2.0 the weight wasnt too much for me, heck i hiked it up a mountain twice. I think the new 70-200 has IS comparable to the 200mm 2.0...

also.. i plan on using both the 1.4 an d2.0 extenders with whatever lens i get.... if that matters for this question

Im just scared of pulling the trigger on the 70-200 and always be looking over my shoulder at the 200mm 2.0

Sharpness aside

you have to consider the aesthetic and technical difference between f2.8 & f2.0. flexibility of zoom vs prime. weight and price.

you could also take into consideration minimum focusing distance where the zoom is better at.

I don't own a zoom. I don't miss shots or miss zooms. One of the biggest fallacy I think in photography today is you have to cover ever F/L to get great shots. Its just not true. The most important thing in my opinion a photographer can do is match his equipment to his vision. For some its zooms but for many its not. I feed my family (very well I might add) and shoot all the time with 2 5DIIs 24L ,35L 85L & 200 2L. I find primes for me and my vision to be the flexible choice.

This is often not said but just to put it out there.

Buy what you can afford. Don't live beyond your means.

The 200mm IS costs a lot of pennies over a 70-200mm IS II.

true dolina...

the money wouldn't be missed (buying the 200mm 2.0) but i feel no need to splurge on that lens if i feel my abilities and requirements could be suited just as well with the 70-200 ii.

In fact the government is dropping an extra $5000 next friday in my account for my wifes tax returns and i will also getting over $3,000 for going back to school for being a disabled veteran. So its basically all free money to me...

all my credit cards have zero balance on them, mine and my wife have cars that are less than 24 months old and like i said in another thread.. im wanting to make a business out of this.. so i want to make sure i have top shelf equipment to make up for my lackluster abilities lol

Zoom is very handy for events...
For far away portrait, I think nothing can touch 200/2.0L IS ...

I guess what I am trying to say is that they are very different tools....

I had chance to try out the 200L for the first time today, and I'm pretty happy with it... :)

I shoot corporate events all the time and never miss not having zooms. My lenses and cameras really fit how I shoot very well.

True but in the case of the 200L I make myself believe I don't need the 70-200 f/2.8 :)

The only time I use a 70-200 is when I do street photography and do not want to get mugged.

Spent a few hours at the Honolulu Zoo yesterday. I didn't shoot as much as I wanted since I was carrying my daughter on my shoulders.
