The old adage that "you only rent L lenses" ( ie: resale prices are 10% lower than new) is not so true anymore. Nope. many many many L lenses are selling for 50% from new at release to used price now. This year, I picked up another copy (Canon refurb./12-month warranty) for $497.

I did send the lens back for the upgrade/update when I bought it used and it was making sounds on my 5D3. I don't know if it's a related issue or not. But I'll wait to see what you report back first.
