I've been wanting some studio light and backdrop to make myself a little studio in my house, and was wondering how much is enough light. I fund this kit on ebay, but only has 150w lights. is this enough light to do basic studio portrait?

here's the ebay link (external link)

if this is not good, let me know what I could get that is better for around the same price, my budget is very limited.

Here's the truth as I see it.....
1) It's a decent kit to sit down and learn lighting with. You get pretty much everything you need. Don't let anyone fool you here. You really do get a lot of useful stuff after you grow out of this kit and if you're serious about photography, you will.

2) Many will mention quality, and it's consistency. But this is not your concern right now.

3) Ny concern is are the bulbs user replaceable? If not, once they burn out, that's it. You're back on Ebay.

4) Believe me, you're probably going to outgrow this kit, and move on. Are you willing to put money in this kit rather than one that's going to last and make you happy?

5) If you are happy with it, get it!! It's just that simple. But just remember it's a starter kit. Period. But a good photographer can work wtih anything.

I get your point. So what would be better lights I could get without spending a fortune, and how many watts should they be?

that's tough... most of the interfit, lowerend novatron stuff is in the same boat i think. you may want to look at the higher end interfit, dyna lite, even alien bees stuff.. it's not as inexpensive, but it will last you for a very long time and give you tons of usability. i have the dlite stuff which is the entry level elinchrom stuff, but i love the quality of light.. the same as the other products, just the build of the unit could be better...

also the flashpoint stuff at adorama looks good...

and don't forget the genesis line at calumet. (probably the best deal out if they still have their kits on sale. incredible deal. primarily the dlite kit, just cheaper and maybe even a better build for around half the price...

see I don't want to spend too much on something I don't know if I will be using it too much. I need something that will give me enough to start and see if I like doing it, and if later I decide to start making money out of this, I'll know more about it and just buy what I'll need then.

I found this one too (external link), I think it might be better then the other one. It has 2 300w and 2 160w. what do you think?

if you guys know a better starter kit, leave me a link please.

this looks like a good deal with the AB's... they are pretty standard lights and are real work horses for most photogs.. easy to travel with and everything..

you'll need some stands and yes a reflector or so, but you can add later. it can grow with you because unless you're going to profoto then you can use these with most all other brands..
