I'm looking for my first backdrop and frame. Any suggestions on where to get a good starter kit would be appreciated. Also, any thoughts on starter colours? White? Black? Gray?
And what about chromakey - is that best left for later?
Thanks.

What kind of a budget are you working with?

I'd check www.amvona.com (external link) or their eBay store. Both the background stands and muslins I've gotten from them have been well worth the money.

I have this background. (external link) I like it a lot. The gray allows me to change the color of the background by gelling my flashes so I can mix up the look a bit. The only thing I wish is that it was a little wider. Good for single portraits, maybe two people. But it starts getting a bit short with two or more people.

I bought an Amvona air cushioned support that is phenominal value for $75. Even comes with a great carry bag.
I've made several of my own backgrounds using muslin and dye. Why pay someone $200 when you can make your own for $20? Get a coupon on the web for JoAnne's (40% off), get the 120" wide, and three or 4 yards will do. Then follow the instructions on DIYPhotography.com
I've made a grey, blue, and a "Monte Green" (named for Monte Zucker, a famous portrait photographer who claims that skin tones pop best when using a dark green background. I like it as well.)
Good luck.
