Drisley, do you find much difference in the speed using the UDMA cards?

cheers,
Iain.

Well, the 1D MKIII doesn't take advantage of UDMA... only the 1DS MKIII.
So, in camera, UDMA doesnt have any advantages, but the card is very fast without the UDMA. It's faster than my Sandisk Ultra II's by a fair margin :)

Also, the 1D MKIII has the largest frame buffer on any camera in the world, so it would be rare to notice problems even with the slowest cards.

HOWEVER, if you get a UDMA card reader for your computer, then they files will fily from reader to your PC. :) And for $99cdn, I couldn't resist. Transcend has been making memory for years and is a very respected company.

I'm using a Transcend 16GB CF card and the speeds are a little on the slow side if you are shooting action shots and assuming you fill the buffer. I haven't had any issues and they are reasonably priced.

For my zoo shots, it wasn't even an issues. So for a wedding it shouldn't affect anything.

Drisley,

you said you can buy a transend 16 gb 133 mhz CF for $99.00 CDN from Costco. I live in Canada also, do you know if they still have them. Last time I looked all they had was the Sandisk Ultra II. At least here in Alberta.

Primarily Kingston 4gb CF cards and 1 Kingston 4gb SD card. The SD card never leaves the camera and I have the write setup to go from the CF to the SD slot in case I shoot more than 4gbs.

I am writing to 2 cards together.

Sandisk Extreme III 4GB CF - RAW
Sandisk 2GB SD - JPG (L)

I went through 3 4GB cards this weekend at a race, so I may get an 8GB card to use as my main CF.

I drop a camera from 500 ft onto concrete and the SD card was still downloaded. It was cracked and bent at a 10 degree angle.

:shock::shock: Not your Mark III I hope..

Where where you in a position for it to drop 500 feet in the first place!?

Wow, you could notice a speed difference? I have Sandisk Ultra II's, a Transcend 133x SD Card, and these Transcend CF cards, and in real world use shooting sports I don't notice any difference.
When I transfer to my PC though with card reader, the Transcend 16GB CF card is by far the fastest though.

Well If I compare my Transcend CF to the Sandisk Extremem III, yes there is a BIG difference in writing times along with buffering. At the local airshow, I had to wait a few times to start shooting again with the Transcend unlike the Sandisk Extreme III.

But as stated, unless you are doing tons of constant action shots, you won't notice any issues with the Transcend.

Mine arrived today (~£53 delivered) and I hope to give it a go - most of my shooting doesn't need a fast card as I don't go in for big bursts - but If I find it limiting, I can relagate it to my 5D and use my 16Gb and 8Gb Extreme III's.

The ducatis are slower. Stop paying a premium for something that underperforms. And CF is slower than SD.

To be honest, I am surprised at how slow the CF cards are compared to SD - from the specs SD cards would appear slower. I alwayes expected SD to become quicker as that seems to be where technology is taking us, but not yet!
Which makes the second slot being SD much more sensible and effectively future proofing the camera.

Interestingly enough, in a 1DsMkIII, the quickest cards are all CF's - Ducatis 8Gb being the quickest (And almost twice as quick as the same card in the 1DMkIII).
