I'm sure this never happens to anyone here, but hypothetically, if your camera had just been sitting around unused and lonely- what would you do? Where would you take it and what kind of pictures would you take?

Of course this is purely hypothetical. I only ask because my...uh...friend wants to know. I would never let my camera go unused.

Same thing with any other artistic hobby. I play guitar, and I haven't been playing much recently. I just don't have much spark to play anymore. However, I don't give up. Just let it gather dust for a bit if you really have no use for it. Eventually I get a spark and start playing again.

Go for a walk or ride somewhere (beautiful, interesting or just wherever) and just see what happens... look for small things, look for big things, try sticking just one lens on (a prime, say) and see what you can find through that.

Dude, I have the same problem. Sometimes I just go into my back yard and start shooting everything that moves. I am lucky, I am right between the mountains and the beach. About an hour and half either way. So sometimes I just get in the car and go.

Just date a new, interesting, and pretty woman (I assume your friend is a man). Soon enough he will be taking lots of photos of her :) Another hobby? How about metal detecting (coin, relic, or gold)? There are very interesting metal detecting clubs in the UK :)

If its your hobby...let it sit. If its your livelyhood then ya gotta pick that thing up and shoot something.

The spark will come back, dont push it, more than likely you wont be satisfied, get frustrated and sit it back down.

I can totally relate to this, I love photography and took so many pictures a few years ago (Ten's of Thousands) then the camera sat in the bag for well over a year. At times I would even bring my camera to various places / events and never even take it out of the bag.

I went on a trip to Vegas last year and brought my camera, I took a ton of pictures at the NHRA Drags. I had such a good time that I went back this year and bought a new lens for it and took even more pictures. Since then I have a renewed interest in shooting just about anything and everything which I didn't have before.

So the bottom line here is that unless it's your job don't worry about it. I'm sure that you will find something to inspire you.

My sister joined a photography club which she loves mostly because they have assignments to shoot a wide variety of things that she would never have normally shot that forces her to do it and also expands her abilities at the same time.

Go to work.;) Sorry, couldn't resist. For non-work photos, however, I understand what you mean. Nature walks, car shows, shoot a road race, take it to a friend's wedding, go see a baseball game. Anything that interests you. And then, once there, try something different and uncomfortable for you...a different technique or style.

Or you can just get a new lens. That seems to do the trick too!:)

I agree with Joe, try something different; if you usually shoot landscapes, go shoot some people (with your camera :)). If all your shots are during the day, try some night shots, experiment with angles, lighting, DOF, long exposures...etc

Also take a look through the different photo sharing threads here. Look at the shots you like and try something similar, putting your own spin on it.

try macro or another photographic genre you have not really explored...

but sometimes its good NOT to shoot for a while...kinda sad just to see the world just through a view finder ( which, more often than not dosn't display the ISO settings!).

inspiration soon returns :-)

Buy a new lens. Something different.

Could get expensive if you continuously get bored though.

I am a project based photographer...

I never Just go out to take photographs.
I have established a relationship in association with the local museum and specialise in local community building projects and the like.
I have four projects on the go at the moment.
The first is the construction of a canal marina, I have been doing progress shots on it for the last two years and have over 400 shots showing every stage ( including many panoramas to show context). The marina it self opens this Friday. Then work starts on an associated Pub and car park soon after
The second project is the demolishing and rebuilding of sheltered housing units
the third is the progress shots of a swimming bath complex.
and the fourth a project to photograph all the local shops and businesses with staff outside them.( as might have been taken in the last century)

It is important when doing this sort of project to get all the necessary permissions and comply with safety instructions and wear the correct safety clothing.

All in all it is far more interesting and rewarding than just taking a camera for a walk.

This way you never are short of photographic opportunities and ideas.

Lack of inspiration is a common occurrence and has been discussed here many times. Maybe you can glean some inspiration from others that have had troubles of their own.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
