70-200 L f4 IS - Noisy IS...?

Hello,

I've recently taken delivery of the above lens - my first IS lens - and noticed with that with the IS on (position 1 or 2) there is a whirring 'mini-engine' type noise for about 3 seconds before during and after picture taking.

It starts with what sounds like a muted matchbox-type scratch noise, then whirrs, then ends with the same short scratchy noise as it goes off.

Is this normal?

It's taking some great pictures. Managed to capture a squirrel on my bird-feeder in the quiet dawn this morning but I noticed the IS makes a noise that I wasn't aware that it would. Am I just being fussy, I had thought that with an expensive Canon L it would be as quiet as the USM motor...?

Thanks

Cheers guys. Glad to hear it.

I'll probably only have it on for 1/50 shutter speeds or under, or if I was panning.

When I had an IS lens, it was on all the time. I'd always use it unless I was in conditions which allow for a consistent Tv of 1/500 or faster.

You paid for it, why not use it?

I will use it yes, just used to quiet lenses so it nagged at me for a while. Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

It will mainly be used outdoors anyway, with all the ambient noise to boot, so I probably won't notice it much anyway.

Cheers

I might put the squirrel up when I get chance (at work all day today...). Incidentally is it easy to post shots straight onto here? Not done it yet.
