Anyone got any experience in removing and replacing the 400mm 5.6 L hood. I dropped mine onto the ground with a fat 1D Mk II N attached and a TCon. The hood is now dented. Lens works as perfect as ever and the body luckily fell on the grass and also perfect. The dent don't show in images but aesthetically it insults my sense of natural balance ;-)a I wonder what Canon will charge to do it, or maybe I could just buy one and DIY?

Making good use of that new N, huh? ;)

Yeah ... was walking along with it all attached to the tripod on the gimbal - all checked and tightened before I set off - and the weight and movement as I walked must have slowly caused the clamp on the Manfrotto to slack just enough for the whole lot to drop off. Lucky the body landed on grass. Says something pretty powerful about value of using a lens hood as that took all the impact. Imagine no hood and just a bloody UV 'protection' filter on there :lol:

Mine was stuck on the lens and had to send it to Canon several weeks ago. Cost $300, but they also had to adjust the lens, so I don't recall the exact amount for just replacing the hood.

Cheers Dave, that is at least an indication. I don't want them to adjust the lens as it is a superb copy ;-)a

I know that Foxy ;)

So here is update ... hood alone costs £65 incl VAT and delivery, but to get it off and on the lens you have to remove the front element, so is heading to Lehmanns next week. They say 4-5 days for part delivery and they will then do it do next day. No real rush. I'm expecting £120 or so. Works superb even with small dent but I am fussy :-)

I think the front element is larger than the hood so it kind of keeps it in place. Therfore I think it needs to come off to get the hood off...

The hood is integrated into the lens design. Works brilliantly.

So, the area from the red ring to the element at the front is the hood? (???)

Then why is there an element at the front of the hood, doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose...

There isn't.

.

The area with the red ring is part of the hood which you twist up and down. There has to be something at the end to stop the hood coming off. As condyk says 'the hood is integrated into the lens design' and yes it works brilliantly.
