I've read several reviews of the Ds MkIII and they refer to the fact that it has sufficient MP to allow for crops and still sell to the magazines and such.

My question is; what numbers, MP, do these places require?

8.5 MP will give you an image that is 8.5" x 11" at 300 ppi. I am not in the magazine business, but that should be plenty.

Having said that, one of my photos was used on a magazine cover after being cropped to about 1.5 MP! So I guess I know that you can get away with 1200 x 1400, at least in some markets.

It depends on the mag to be honest. Some mags do not have a limit but most tend to be about 8mp now.
