Just as she showed up, the heavy clouds moved in and the sun disappeared. She promptly admitted that she hated having pictures taken of her and was very nervous. The wind started blowing about 30mph. Then, halfway throught the shoot, the sun was showing up for about 1 minute at a time, for a terrible on/off sun effect which made metering seemingly impossible.

I shot everything here with the 85 1.8, 5d, and a 580ex.

Please offer any criticism you might have.

They look pretty good given your circumstances...

I would take heavy clouds over bright sunlight any day...makes for one gigantic softbox and little to no need for fill.

keep up the good work!

Just at a quick glance I think they all look good.

I usually walk around with my clients looking for good reflected sunlight from buildings, walls, or whatever I find. That kind of light tends to be very attractive compared to straight clouds. These clouds were black anyway, no softbox effect present. I know what you mean though. Direct light is almost worthless.

Thanks for looking.

The second shot is my favorite by far. I love the contrasting colors. And my wife is a musician, so I'm a sucker for brass! :p
