I'm thinking you might have been using the wrong AF point, that your AF might have been struggling to lock focus on a high-contrast part of the image, that you didn't give the lens long enough to lock AF, that you let go of the AF button for a split second before releasing the shutter ... any of these things.


Thanks.. I appreciate all the comments. I will be shooting again tomorrow so I will give it a whirl again with these things in mind.

The 40D never focuses right. All I've seen is bad bad bad from the 40D. It appears every bodies is just a little bit off on focusing. I think it's an error Canon needs to fix.

I have 30d, 100-400L and 1dmk2. What I have seen is that when using AI servo mode, 1 series bodies are much more accurate compared to xxD series. That could result in slightly out of focus shots when shooting in AI servo mode,e ven when you have the focus point wxactly where you wanted.
