I was at Pimlico on Saturday. We were too far from the track to get close shots of the big race, but were able to move closer afterward for the last race of the day. This was my first time at a track (and my first time shooting anything moving this fast). I know I should have given them room to run toward in #2, but I only had one shot at this.

Is the vignetting part of post processing?

Yes. It was intentional. I fear it's a bit overdone?

I really like the first one, it has a nice old time feel to it and it looks like the jockey is adjusting his goggles which adds to the picture in my opinion.

The only thing that distracts me a bit is the golf cart wheel which fits perfectly under the horses neck.

ha! Didn't even notice the wheel before. Now it's distracting me too. I will have to try to clone it out. Thanks.

Nice. I agree, I think the vignetting is a little too rich...but I really like the pp of the rest... the color tone is really nice. For first time attempt, you did really well!

Thanks everybody for your comments. If I have time later, I will back off on the vignetting and repost.

Interesting. Not something we see on here everyday !

IMO for the second shot , you need to leave some room for the 4-horse to run into. His nose is right at frame edge.

OK, here are the reposts without the vignetting - plus an extra from the last race and one of Big Brown (from pretty far away). I'm not a fan of the dead-center subject on that last one, but every time I try to crop it I lose some fans at the top and/or bottom. I'm open to your crop suggestions.

Thanks, I mentioned that in my original post as well. More room on the right would have definitely have been better.

Really cool shots. I like the vignetting, it looks really old school. I think I have a reason to go to the track now... what lens were those with, the tamron or Canon L?

Thank you! The track was quite an experience - especially when we got close and could hear the horses thundering by. In answer to you question - I wanted to bring my 70-200 f4 but I was not sure if they would let me in with it. I wound up using the 24-105 with 1.4x Tamron extender for all of these shots.

Think 1 has a very nice feel to it, the PP imo really adds something to the shot!

5 and 6th with the same pp as one i think would be winners, nice work, and different in a good way:)
