Well after selling off almost all of my material possessions and eating 5 dollar foot longs from subway for weeks in order to save money, I finally scraped up enough for the 24-70 !! I was slightly worried about the hubbub regarding the lack of QC and number of bad copies with this lens, but after some preliminary shots I think I am pretty satisfied that its a good copy. I think its almost sharper then my 70-200!

Sorry for the boring subjects, I'll try to get some ducks in when it cools off a bit

:D

The dog is beautiful!

Just out of interest, how do you find the fact that it's extended when zoomed out (if I'm correct)? I always thought this was odd and somehow 'illogical'. Not sure why and realistically I suppose it makes no difference. Still, what are your thoughts?

I agree very strange. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the reason they designed it that way. An interesting point though is that when it is zoomed out at its widest spot the hood is the smallest (so as not to become part of the image) in that way its a pretty good idea. A large hood when zoomed in, and just enough of a hood to block flare when its zoomed out wide angle.

He's still a puppy and doesn't want to hold still for very long :)

Yeah, beautiful dog.

This is not the only lens where it's extended for wide and retracted for zoom.
The Zeiss 35-70 f/3.4 for Contax works the same way.

The beauty in Canon's design here is that the barrel is full retracted inside the
deep hood for telephot, where you can make use of the longer hood length, while
it is extended for wide angle, where you need a shallower hood depth. The hood
depth is thus optimized for both extremes of focal length.

Congrats on getting a fine lens. It is beautiful for portrait work and semi-macro
work.
