I'm ordering a few items from B&H, and I was considering adding the 100mm macro I've had my eye on for some time. I was looking around and noticed the 90mm TS-E focuses to a pretty reasonable 1:3.5, which can be increased further with extension tubes. I found quite a few posts by photographers saying they actually use the 90mm much more often than the 100mm because of the extra benefits.

I have done a good deal of macro work in the past, and the fixed plane of focus is a constant problem. I would love to be able be able to tilt it and take off-axis shots. I understand the 90mm is also good for landscape stitching because of the shift feature.

The price is a concern, but it wouldn't be a big deal, given the obvious benefits. However, I'm not sure the TS-E is a reasonable substitute for a proper macro lens. Does anyone else have experience using it in the macro range?

I call my 90 TS-E my "mushroom" lens. The tilt is wonderful for placing the little bit of DOF you have exactly where you need it. Not only does it take ext. tubes well, it also takes TCs very well. Great for macro. But I also have a Sigma 150 and 180 macro for when I need more power and/or working distance.

I am thinking of just buying the 90mm and seeing how I get on with it. I have used the Sigma 180mm macro as well, so I know what you mean about the extra working distance. Obviously it would be best to have both...

Doh, I was going to order it from B&H last night, but it's out of stock. They also no longer carry the umbrellas I was going to get. I'm trying to put together the same order from Adorama, but they don't have as good a selection...

Any other opinions on the 90 TS-E?
