Fisheye lens or adaptor

Hello everyone,

I love the effect of fisheye lenses so would like to purchase one, however as it is only going to be for fun, I wondered whether anyone knew of a fisheye adaptor that I could screw onto an existing lens?

I have the 40D (so obviously won't get the full effect of a fisheye anyway), and lens-wise I have the 10-22mm, 17-85mm, 70-300mm and 100mm macro. If they even exist, would a fisheye adapter even work on one of these lenses? I realise that I have an ultra-wide angle lens in the 10-22mm but just want the distortion of the fisheye.

If there is no such thing as an adaptor ( I have been told they exist but have searched long and hard for one and cannot see any evidence - Jessops and Jacobs havent been able to help me either), can anyone recommend a fisheye lens instead? The lower the price the better - I am not after amazing quality, just the fun of the effect.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.
:)

If you really are interested in taking fisheye pictures, just spend the money and get a lens. The adapters really don't offer much in terms of image quality. I think Sigma makes a couple fisheye lenses for crop bodies, that will give you a full 180 degree field of view.

I have a fisheye lens, and use it more often than I thought I would. Its a fun lens!

You will get the full effect if you get either a Sigma 10mm or Tokina 10-17 fisheye. I have the Sigma 10mm fisheye and it's a lot of fun on my 40D.

Or, if you're feeling more adventurous there's also the Sigma 4.5mm circular fisheye.

If you don't need the full effect, a cheap entry into a fisheye is the Zenitar 16mm full-frame fisheye (full frame in this case means 24x36). It will not give you the 180-degree diagonal field of view, but it will give you the fisheye effect.

Here's an example:

The cost is well under $200, and it is available from DVDTechnik in their eBay store. They sell it with a Canon mount, but I recommend getting it with a M42 screw mount, and then get the $35 M42/EF adapter with the focus confirmation. You won't have autofocus, but you will have focus confirmation in the viewfinder.

This lens won't be as good as the best fisheyes, but it will be streets ahead of any supplemental fisheye adapter that attaches to the front of another lens.

I would disagree with the Zenitar 16mm on a 40D. I have a 15mm and I just don't think the fishiness is there on a 40D.

A better cheap alternative IMO would be the Peleng 8mm. There will be vignetting in the corners but nothing a bit of cropping wouldn't cure.
