Hi everyone,

I have read almost every single posting about TC's and I haven't get what I'm looking for, or so I think LOL.

I have a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM and dont have the budget to get another lens like a 100-400mm and above; I'm looking on TC's for my Lens but I would like for some of you that has use this lens with like TC 1.4x alone or 2 1.4x or 2x or 1.4 and a 2x to give me your comments and if any of you have some sample pictures to go alone with the comments.

thanks

This lens works well with the 1.4 but not so well with the 2x, here are some shots with the 1.4x.

I've used both TCs with the 70-200mm and 100-400mm, and the 1.4x definitely is cleaner - but I've gotten quite usable shots with the 2x as well. In fact, I originally bought the 2x to use with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS as I didn't want to pop for the 100-400mm and actually come out somwhat ahead; a weathersealed 140-400mm f/5.6 combo. Bonus was carrying only a 2x instead of another heavy lens.

In the end I went for the 100-400mm because no matter how you look at it, a "naked" lens will [almost] always give you a better image than one shot with TCs. I say almost, because the super-teles are the exception to the rule. My 1.4x basically lives on the 100-400mm.

Does the 2x degrade IQ? Slow down AF? Yes on both counts; but I wouldn't say it's as "bad" as some make it out to be. But if you plan to shoot at a particular focal length often (say ~400mm) it makes sense to get the appropriate zoom/prime for that focal length.

Great,

do you have any sapmle pictures of both the 1.4 and 2?

I dont have the money at the moment since I just got this lens few days ago.

I thingk I'm going to get the 1.4 first then the 2x and eventually the 100-400m.

please post sample picture guys I would like to see them before I buy this.

The 70-200 2.8 IS is not my favorite lens to put a TC of any kind on. Its not that the images are not usable but I think it really slows down the AF response time and speed. The photos don't have the pop that they should either. As a matter of fact I think my 300 F4 IS takes a TC better than the zoom. And we won't even begin to compare it to the 200 1.8.

Both with a 1.4x. Response was so bad I have never even tried a 2x on it.

Hey, that first shot looks somehow familiar, Michael :)

@OP - I definitely wouldn't plan on stacking the 1.4x and 2x like you've mentioned a few times. I don't think you'd be happy at all with the results.

Yeah, that's definitely not a good idea. Especially if you don't like to manually focus. ;)

On the excellent advice of posters here, I bought a Kenko 1.4x TC for my 70-200 and it works just fine. I can go to f/4 which is good for the outdoor sports shots I'm taking in bright light. I got mine on Ebay (again as recommended here) for about $140 shipped.

Well looks like they are both giving great results with those lenses,

thank you for the samples, anyone have more pictures using the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS lens and the TC 1.4x or the 2x?

Here's a picture of a cormarant I shot with my 70-200L2.8 IS with 2x TC hand-held. ... No way I could have snapped this pic without the TC, it wouldn't let me get close enough. This pic is as-shot, no sharpening, no PP. ... I just grabbed it off the hard disk to post you an example.

BTW - I just realized that by posting via a link to FLICKR, the EXIF gets stripped. So here's the pertinent info for your evaluation:

Aperture: f/5.6
Shutter: 1/1600 sec
ISO: 400
EC: +0
Focal Length: 400mm
Metering: Pattern
IS: On - Mode 1
