Canon PowerShot A530

I've had this camera for 2 years and have read the entire manual. It's driving me crazy! The flash is always on and I don't even see an option to turn it off for always. My pictures always come out awful and my one year old daughter closes her eyes because she knows the flash is coming! I have a Canon PowerShot A530 so if anyone has the same camera and knows how to turn it off..can you please help me?! Or if anyone just knows or can find out how, I would SO appreciate it! I'm so confused and desperately need help! PLEASSSE!

I am glad you are asking. It always amazes me that people don't know how to turn the flash off. I suspect this is the prime reason most museums and, particularly Italian, churches no longer even allow any photography.

Anyway....check the lighting bolt (flash symbol !?!?) on the back of your camera. The following image is from the A530 Basic (short) manual...don't know why it is not in the "Advanced" manual.

BTW....now that you know how to turn it off.....you can also learn how to force it on....lightning blot without the 'A'. This is very useful when shooting people in full sun. It will get rid of the shadows you probably get in the faces of people you shoot. Try it.

Amazing - I have been under the impression that the flash could NOT be turned off on most P&S models. If nothing else this has got to extend battery life....

And ProudMommy - welcome to the forums and please accept my apology for being so flippant....

...but it would have worked too.

I've never come across a P&S (and nonetheless a Canon P&S) that couldn't have the flash shut off. That is, unless you're using auto modes. And in that case, most P&S's I've seen have a "No Flash" auto mode specifically made for places where flash photography is prohibited (it's got the lightning bolt with a circle-cross through it). I know my father's A540 has the flash button and a no-flash auto mode.

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

That's why I love my S2IS. If you want flash lift it up. If you don't then leave it closed. No auto anything.
